ONCOMETABOLOGY
MAIN INTRODUCTORY DOCUMENTS
WHAT IF CANCER ORIGINATED PRIMARILY FROM SYSTEMIC METABOLISM, NOT FROM THE TUMOR CELL? #ONCOMETABOLOGY
Cancer has traditionally been viewed through a reductionist lens, as a disease caused by genetic mutations that alter cellular signaling and lead to uncontrolled proliferation.
Yet, in the last two decades, a more complex vision has emerged: cancer is not only a genetic disorder but also a systemic one.
It develops and thrives within an organism influenced by metabolism, immunity, chronic inflammation, neuroendocrine signaling, microbiota, lifestyle, and environmental exposures.
This multifactorial reality underscores the limitations of an exclusively gene-centered view and highlights the need for a more integrative framework.
Oncometabology, a new multidisciplinary branch of Oncology created by the "International Senology Oncology Scientific Community (ISOSC)" in July 2025, is proposed as such a framework.
At its heart lies the recognition that low-grade chronic inflammation (LGCI) is a central driver linking cancer to stress, obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, neurodegeneration, and aging.
